Guan Yu, Wukong's Pavilions, Yuan Murals: A Three-Day Yuncheng Base Plan
Base in central Yuncheng: day one Guandi Temple and Pujiu Temple by bus and rail; day two a hired-car Wanrong loop (Feiyun, Houtu Temple, Balong Pagoda); day three Yongle Palace in Ruicheng — checking Monday opening first.

Base yourself in central Yuncheng for three nights. Day one: Guandi Temple and Pujiu Temple by bus and train. Day two: a hired-car loop through Wanrong for Feiyun Pavilion, Houtu Temple and Balong Pagoda. Day three: Yongle Palace's murals in Ruicheng. Do not schedule Yongle for a Monday until you have checked that it is open.
Why this order?
Yuncheng's sights are spread across counties in three directions. Day one runs along the one corridor that public transport handles well. Days two and three need a car, so you can book a single driver for both. Yongle Palace goes last because it is the site most likely to have a weekday closure. If the day falls on a Monday, swap days two and three.
Day 1 — Guan Yu and the Western Chamber (bus and rail)
Morning. Take bus 116 or a taxi to Xiezhou Guandi Temple. Enter through Jieyi Garden and walk the axis to Chunqiu Tower, checking whether its statue area has reopened. Allow 2–3 hours. Have mutton soup in Xiezhou. The food guide explains how to order.
Afternoon. Continue west on bus 116, or go back to Yuncheng North for the 20-minute train to Yongji North. Take a taxi to Pujiu Temple, then Stork Tower if you want a big Yellow River view near closing time. Return to Yuncheng by train.
Day 2 — Wanrong: two Wukong pavilions and a Zhong Kui pagoda (car)
Early start. Drive about an hour north to Feiyun Pavilion. Climb the timber stairs if they are open, and allow an hour.
Late morning. Drive roughly 40 km south-west to Houtu Temple on the Yellow River. See Qiufeng Pavilion and the three-part stage, and allow 1–1.5 hours.
Afternoon. Find the lone Balong Temple Pagoda near Zhonglizhuang, also in Ronghe town. There is no ticket, no climbing, and you should expect renovation fencing. Keep the driver waiting. Have steamed dishes in Wanrong town on the way back. You should be in Yuncheng by early evening.
If you are short of energy, drop Balong. Feiyun plus Houtu is a full day for most people.
Day 3 — Yongle Palace (car or bus)
Cross the Zhongtiao mountains to Ruicheng, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. Spend two unhurried hours at Yongle Palace: Sanqing Hall first for the Chaoyuan Tu, then the Lü Dongbin story in Chunyang Hall. Return to Yuncheng in the afternoon for an onward train. With the same driver, the Yellow River crossing at Dayu Ferry (大禹渡) is a possible extra on the way back.
What if you only have one or two days?
- One day, no car: Day 1 as written.
- One day, art first: Yongle Palace in the morning, Guandi Temple on the way back.
- Two days: Days 1 and 2. Swap Wanrong for Ruicheng if murals matter more to you than timber pavilions.
What has to be checked before you go?
Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Each piece links its own sources. Official notices at each site win. The biggest moving parts are:
- whether Yongle Palace closes on Mondays (listings disagree);
- whether Chunqiu Tower's statue area at Guandi Temple has reopened;
- the renovation status at Balong Pagoda;
- whether the weekend 城景通 shuttle is running (see transport).
Where does Yuncheng fit in a longer Shanxi trip?
Yuncheng is the southern end of the Datong–Xi'an high-speed line. Coming from the north, you can link it with a Datong three-day trip and Yingxian's wooden pagoda by train through Taiyuan. Then continue to Xi'an, about an hour or so beyond Yuncheng North.
