This notice explains how China by Road (the organization behind chinabyroad.com) handles information when you visit the site or subscribe to the dispatch. We are the controller for the processing described here.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how readers use the site. The measurement ID is taken from the environment variable NEXT_PUBLIC_GA_MEASUREMENT_ID; if that variable is unset, the site falls back to measurement ID G-2TR1XXTXB4. The Analytics script is loaded in the root layout and typically records page views, approximate device and browser information, and approximate location as provided by Google Analytics. Retention of Analytics data follows Google's policies for that product.

Cookies and similar technologies

The Google Analytics script may set cookies or use similar storage technologies in your browser. We do not implement separate advertising remarketing pixels in the site layout beyond Google Analytics.

Newsletter

The homepage newsletter form (China by Road Dispatch) collects your email address and sends it via a POST request to Formspree (formspree.io). The purpose is editorial email updates about the archive. If you subscribe, Formspree processes your address on our behalf according to their terms and privacy practices.

Hosting and third parties

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Third parties involved in the processing above include Google (Analytics) and Formspree (newsletter). Those providers process data under their own terms when you interact with their services through this site.
