One Rail Hub, Sites in Every Direction: Getting to Yuncheng and Around Its Counties

Arrive at Yuncheng North by high-speed rail (about 1–1.5 hours from Xi'an, 2–2.5 from Taiyuan South, 5.5–7 from Beijing West) or fly into Yuncheng Salt Lake airport; bus 116 covers Guandi Temple, but Wanrong and Ruicheng need a car.

Most travellers reach Yuncheng (运城) by high-speed train to Yuncheng North. Listed journeys take about 1 to 1.5 hours from Xi'an, 2 to 2.5 hours from Taiyuan South and 5.5 to 7 hours from Beijing West. Once there, the bus covers Guandi Temple and Yongji, but Wanrong and Ruicheng realistically need a hired car.

Which station or airport?

Yuncheng North (运城北站) is the high-speed station on the Datong–Xi'an line. It is the right arrival for almost everyone and sits on the northern edge of the city. The older Yuncheng station (运城站) in town handles conventional trains.

Yuncheng Salt Lake International Airport (运城盐湖国际机场) has domestic flights. It is useful if you are coming from the south or east, where the train journey is long.

Times above are listing ranges. 12306 and your ticket win. Trains on this line are popular around holidays, so book once your dates are fixed.

How do you reach each site?

| Site | Without a car | With a car | |---|---|---| | Guandi Temple, Xiezhou | Bus 116 from the central bus station (launched at 4 yuan to the temple) or local bus 11 | About 30 minutes | | Pujiu Temple, Yongji | HSR to Yongji North (about 20 minutes), then taxi; or bus 116 to Yongji | Under an hour | | Yongle Palace, Ruicheng | Long-distance bus to Ruicheng, then taxi | Roughly 1–1.5 hours over the Zhongtiao range | | Feiyun Pavilion, Wanrong | Train or bus to Wanrong, then taxi | About an hour | | Houtu Temple and Balong Pagoda | Not practical | Add a long half-day beyond Feiyun |

Is there a tourist shuttle?

Sometimes. Yuncheng has run a weekend and holiday service called 城景通, with six lines from Yuncheng North and the airport. They cover Yongji, Ruicheng, Wanrong–Hejin and other counties, with one departure a day at about 7:00, booked through the "运城城景通" WeChat mini-program. In 2025 it ran only on set weekends and holidays. Treat it as a bonus if the dates line up, not as a plan.

Hire a driver or rent?

For Wanrong (Feiyun, Houtu, Balong) and Ruicheng, a car with a driver for the day is the normal answer. Hotels and ride-hail apps can arrange one. Agree the stops and waiting time in writing on your phone before you set off. The countryside around Balong Pagoda has no reliable return transport. Self-drive needs a Chinese licence.

Where should you base yourself?

Stay in central Yuncheng (Yanhu District) for all three days. Every site is a day return from there, and the city has the most hotels and food. Pick somewhere near the high-speed station only if you arrive late and leave early. Yongji works as an alternative base if your trip leans toward Pujiu and the Yellow River side.

Practical check

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). 12306, the bus operator's notices and the 城景通 mini-program win over the ranges here. Bus 116's fares and 20-minute interval come from its 2022 launch report. Expect small changes. Summer service has run 6:00–19:30 and winter service 6:00–18:30.

Coming from northern Shanxi? The same rail line runs south from Datong through Taiyuan, so Yuncheng works as the southern end of a Shanxi-by-rail trip. Then see the three-day plan.
