Caves, Wall Temples, Cliff: A Three-Day Datong Sequence
Three-day Datong — Yungang Day 1, old-city temples and wall Day 2, Hanging Temple Day 3 — with Hengshan and modern half-day as optional add/skip; visit order that reuses series intents, checked October 2026.

Datong does not reward bolting Yungang, both timber temples, the wall, and the Hanging Temple into one sticky afternoon. Soft-read the citywide cultural frame once — caves, Liao–Jin halls, wall, cliff fringe — then use this path as visit order, not a hotel or flight plan.
This three-day Datong sequence runs Day 1 at Yungang Grottoes, Day 2 on old-city temples and the wall with knife-cut noodles as meal glue, and Day 3 at Hanging Temple — with Mount Heng and a modern half-day as optional add/skip. Soft-check real-name cave tickets and capped climbing sales the week you travel.
Day 1: Pace the Cliff at Yungang
Morning to Afternoon: One Corridor, Not Cave Numbers
Give Yungang Grottoes (云冈石窟) most of a daylight window — Tan Yao Five Caves for imperial scale, then later chambers for painted detail. Arrive near open; walk one direction; skip the urge to collect every numbered niche. Soft judgment: half a rushed circuit plus a taxi to the next “must-see” usually wastes both.
Soft stop facts (checked October 2026): autumn hours about 08:30–16:30, stop entry after 16:30; peak adult about ¥120 — book real-name 1–15 days ahead via Academy / scenic mini-programs. Detail, sources, and pacing live on the Yungang sibling — do not re-race ticket blocks here.
Evening: Soft Close Near Base
Return to a Datong overnight near the old city or Datong Station. Keep dinner simple; save knife-cut noodles as Day 2 meal glue rather than inventing a late nightlife checklist.
Day 2: Wall Height, Timber Temples, Noodle Glue
Morning: Rampart Stretch, Then Inner Fabric
Climb a named gate on the ancient city wall (大同古城墙) for height and orientation, walk one stretch, then drop into lanes toward the temples. Soft stop: daytime wall-wide free open was announced in 2026 (confirm “大同古城墙景区” WeChat the morning you go) — hours and free-open notices live on the wall sibling.
Afternoon: Huayan and Shanhua — Choose, Don’t Twin-Stamp
Hold Huayan vs Shanhua as one choose/read morning-into-afternoon: Huayan for Liao sculpture depth; Shanhua for a complete axial courtyard. Both sit inside the old city within walking distance — one honest pass can hold both if you do not treat them as generic twins. Soft ticket windows (peak Huayan about ¥50, Shanhua preferential about ¥40) and WeChat boards: soft-point to the dual-temple page rather than duplicating long fare tables.
Evening: Knife-Cut Noodles as Meal Glue
Close with Datong knife-cut noodles (刀削面) near the wall–temple area — watch the shave, name broth and topping, judge ribbon chew. Soft lunch-to-early-evening windows; confirm the board, never invent a single shop’s closing minute.
Day 3: Hanging Temple Day Trip — Hengshan Optional
Morning to Afternoon: Gorge Stop from a Datong Base
Day-trip south to Hunyuan for Hanging Temple (悬空寺) — one gorge stop with capped climbing tickets already booked, not a walk from the old-city wall and not a plug-in after a Yungang half-circuit. Soft stop facts (checked October 2026): autumn about 08:00–17:00; park + climbing commonly about ¥115 adult — book via “北岳云游”; full hours and ticket discipline on the Hanging Temple sibling.
Optional add: Mount Heng after the cliff
Add or skip Mount Heng (恒山) only with spare daylight, trail fitness, and walkable weather after the gorge. Skip is a clean answer if one Hunyuan day already went to the cliff halls alone — soft judgment and temple-cluster tickets live on the Hengshan page.
Optional swap / half-day: Modern / coal layer
If you prefer contemporary fabric over the mountain add, swap a half-day to Datong’s coal heritage / modern read — Jinhuagong Mine Park across from Yungang pairs cleanly with a cave day leftover, or sits as a soft Day 2 / Day 4 half-day. Do not race mine park, both temples, and the gorge into the same daylight.
How do you move between stops?
Day 1: high-speed usually lands at Datong South (大同南站); Datong Station (大同站) sits closer to the old city. Municipal scenic through-bus has linked Datong South to Yungang in about 40 minutes at ¥10 when operating — confirm numbers the morning you go (detail on the Yungang page). Day 2: wall and Huayan / Shanhua are walk-and-taxi inside the old-city fabric. Day 3: southbound morning toward the Hengshan visitor center, then scenic shuttle — same logistics spine as the Hanging Temple and Hengshan siblings. Soft deep dives: overview, Yungang, Huayan / Shanhua, wall, noodles, Hanging Temple, Hengshan, modern.
When should you go, and what must you re-check?
April–June and September–October are kinder for cliff and wall walking. Soft flags the week you travel: Yungang real-name tickets and autumn last-entry; Hanging Temple capped climbing via “北岳云游”; Huayan / Shanhua WeChat boards; wall free-open window; Hengshan add only with spare light; Jinhuagong desk phones if you take the modern half-day. Who this is not for: travelers packing caves, both temples, full wall loop, and the gorge into one short afternoon — the sequence is the point.
