Xinzhou West, Shahe or Straight from Taiyuan: Getting to Wutai Shan

Take the train to Xinzhou West and the scenic-area express bus to Taihuai (about 1.5 hours), or to Wutaishan station at Shahe and the red shuttle (about an hour); direct express buses also run from Taiyuan's airport and stations and from Datong South. Self-drive cars need a reservation.

For most travellers the simplest route to Wutai Shan is a train to Xinzhou West (忻州西站) and then the scenic-area express bus to Taihuai, about 1.5 hours. From the north, take a train to Wutaishan station (五台山站) at Shahe and the red shuttle, about an hour. Direct buses also run from Taiyuan and Datong South.

Which gateway suits your route?

| Coming from | Best gateway | Then | |---|---|---| | Taiyuan (city or airport) | Direct express bus from Wusu airport, Taiyuan South or Taiyuan station | Straight to the Wutai Shan visitor centre | | Beijing or Shijiazhuang by rail | Xinzhou West | Express bus to Taihuai, about 1.5 hours | | Datong | Datong South direct bus, or train to Wutaishan station (Shahe) | Red shuttle about 1 hour | | Shijiazhuang by road | Direct buses from Zhengding airport and the main bus station | Into the valley | | By air | Wutai Shan airport (五台山机场) at Dingxiang | Express bus to the visitor centre |

Shanxi media reported in late September 2026 that express buses run in both directions roughly 6:00–18:00 from the airports and stations. You buy tickets on the “山西文旅行” WeChat mini-program. The Datong South service is sold through “大同景区直通车”. Visitor guides from August 2026 list the Xinzhou West bus at about 35 yuan and the Shahe red shuttle at about 25 yuan, with departures 6:00–18:30. Prices and times are from listings. The mini-programs win.

What about the Tang temples on the way?

Foguang Temple and Nanchan Temple lie south-west of the mountain, off the express-bus routes. To see them, hire a car for the day from Taihuai or Taiyuan, or join a local tour that names them. The usual route among architecture enthusiasts runs Shahe → Wutai Shan → Foguang → Nanchan → Taiyuan, so you never double back.

Can you drive in?

Yes, with a reservation. Buy your ticket on the “五台山游客服务中心” WeChat account first, then reserve the car up to five days ahead. The cap is 2,000 small vehicles a day, and new slots are released at 6:00 and 9:00. If you do not get one, park at an outer car park and ride the free transfer bus in. You may use the south, north or west entrance. Self-drive in China needs a Chinese licence.

How do you get around inside?

Free scenic buses link the visitor centre with the core area. Line 8 runs south past Baiyun, Zhenhai and Shuxiang temples to the Dailuoding interchange. Lines 10 and 11 cover the west and north. All three meet at Dailuoding. Licensed taxis run by the scenic area's operator give point-to-point rides. Taihuai's central temples are close enough to walk between, as described in the Taihuai two-day guide.

Avoid touts offering cheap peak tours. For the terraces, use official vehicles. The five terraces piece explains why.
