Arrive at Wutai Shan from Shahe or Xinzhou West and sleep two nights in Taihuai. Day one is for the valley temples and day two for Dailuoding and the peaks or quieter monasteries. On day three, leave south-west by hired car through Foguang and Nanchan to Taiyuan. Keep day three off a Monday. Yanmen Pass makes an optional fourth day.
Why run it one way?
Xinzhou's highlights sit in a line. Yanmen and the Shahe gateway are in the north, Wutai Shan is in the middle, and the two Tang temples are in the south-west, on the road to Taiyuan. Travelling one way, north to south or the reverse, means you never double back. Keeping the Tang temples for the exit day lets you shift them by a day if your dates would land on a Monday, when both are closed.
Day 1 — Into the valley
Take the train to Wutaishan station (Shahe) if you are coming from Datong, and ride the red shuttle up. From Beijing or Taiyuan, take the train to Xinzhou West and the express bus. Book your entry ticket on the official WeChat account. Since August 2026 it covers today and tomorrow (transport details).
Afternoon: walk Taihuai's core temples: Tayuan's white stupa, Xiantong, the stair up to Pusading, and Shuxiang if you still have the energy (Taihuai guide). Have dinner and an early night. It gets cold.
Day 2 — Dailuoding and a choice
Early morning: Wuye Temple before the crowds, then Dailuoding by stairway or cable car.
Rest of the day, depending on season:
- July–September, clear weather: an official-vehicle trip to two or three terraces (five terraces).
- Otherwise: quieter monasteries on the scenic bus lines, such as Nanshan Temple to the south. Then a slow afternoon in town.
Your ticket expires at the end of this day under the two-day rule.
Day 3 — Tang timber on the way out (car)
Book a driver for a one-way Taihuai → Taiyuan day.
Morning: Foguang Temple. Aim for the 9:30 or 10:50 free talk listed in the off-season schedule, and stand under the East Hall's brackets.
Early afternoon: Nanchan Temple, half an hour with China's oldest dated timber hall. The 15:30 talk works if you have lunch on the way.
Evening: arrive in Taiyuan for the train or flight.
Optional Day 4 — Yanmen Pass
From Taihuai, drive north via Daixian or come down from Shahe. Give Yanmen Pass three to four hours, entering by the south gate when the north car park is full. Continue north to Shuozhou and Datong, or return to Daixian station. This works best for anyone travelling Datong → Xinzhou → Taiyuan.
What has to be checked before you go?
Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Each piece links its own sources. The official notices for each site win. The moving parts are:
- Monday closures at Foguang and Nanchan (from 1 September 2026; holiday Mondays may shift);
- Wutai Shan's ticket and car reservation on “五台山游客服务中心”;
- terrace weather closures from autumn onward;
- Yanmen's switch to winter hours on 1 November.
Where does Xinzhou fit in a Shanxi trip?
Between Datong and Taiyuan. A northern Shanxi week runs Datong three days → Yingxian day-return → this plan → Taiyuan, by rail and one hired car.
