Two days in Taiyuan is enough for the essentials. Day one: the Shanxi Museum in the morning, then Chunyang Palace and the Twin Pagodas in the afternoon. Day two: Jinci and Tianlongshan, linked by the scenic shuttle. Book the museum and Jinci on WeChat in advance, avoid Mondays for day one, then move on by train to Pingyao, Datong or Wutai Shan.
Before you arrive: what needs booking?
- Shanxi Museum: free, real-name WeChat booking. Slots open at 20:00 three days ahead and at 08:00 on the day. Closed Mondays except holidays. Details: Shanxi Museum guide.
- Jinci: WeChat booking, essential on holidays. Consider the joint ticket with Tianlongshan. Details: Jinci guide.
- Onward train: book on 12306. See Taiyuan as a rail hub.
Where should you stay?
Near the centre, around Wuyi Square or along Yingze Street, if you want food and evening walks. Near Taiyuan South if you are mainly changing trains. The centre makes both days easier.
Day 1 — Museum and the east side
- Morning: Shanxi Museum, 2.5–3 hours. Bronzes, the Northern dynasties, Buddhist sculpture and the merchants' galleries.
- Lunch: Noodles. Knife-cut or tijian with vinegar (noodles and vinegar).
- Early afternoon: Cross the Fen River to Chunyang Palace near Wuyi Square, about an hour. It is closed on Mondays.
- Late afternoon: The Twin Pagodas in the south-east, about an hour, in good light. Mind the 17:00 last ticket in the April–October season.
- Evening: Dinner in the centre. Order guoyourou.
Day 2 — Jinci and Tianlongshan
- Early (optional, cold months): Tounao breakfast, if you can face mutton soup at dawn.
- Morning: Taxi or bus 308 to Jinci, then 2.5–3 hours: the Hall of the Holy Mother, the Flying Bridge, the springs.
- Lunch: Near the Jinci gate.
- Afternoon: Scenic shuttle line 1 up to Tianlongshan. The cliff caves, then the Treasures Hall. Last check-in is 16:30 in October.
- Evening: Back to the city, or straight to Taiyuan South for an evening train to Pingyao, about half an hour away.
What if you only have one day?
Do Jinci in the morning and the Shanxi Museum in the afternoon, if you can get a slot. Or, if the museum is closed or full, Jinci plus Tianlongshan. Skip Chunyang Palace and the pagodas.
What if it is a Monday?
The museum and Chunyang Palace are closed on Mondays except public holidays. Make Monday your Jinci day and swap the order.
Where do you go next?
- Pingyao: about half an hour by high-speed train to Pingyao Gucheng.
- Datong: about 1 hour 23 minutes at the fastest to Datong South. Then the Datong three-day plan.
- Wutai Shan: a three-to-four-hour coach, or a train via Xinzhou West plus a bus.
- Changzhi: about an hour south-east for the Black Myth: Wukong temples.
What should you check each evening?
Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Confirm museum and Jinci bookings, seasonal hours (they change on 1 November at several sites), and your train on 12306. Official notices win over this plan.
