Chunyang Palace (纯阳宫) is a compact Daoist temple to the immortal Lü Dongbin in central Taiyuan. It now houses the Shanxi Ancient Architecture Museum (山西古建筑博物馆), formerly the Shanxi Art Museum. It is closed on Mondays, the ticket is 30 yuan, and from June to October it opens 09:00–17:30. An hour is plenty.

What is the building?

Lü Dongbin, known by his Daoist name Chunyang, is one of the Eight Immortals and was born, according to tradition, in Shanxi. His temples are common in the province. The Taiyuan one is a Ming and Qing complex squeezed into a city block near Wuyi Square. It packs in a lot: a series of narrow courtyards, raised terraces, a two-storey pavilion and small towers. You climb through it rather than walk through it, which gives it a hidden, layered feel quite different from the open temple grounds at Jinci.

What is in the museum?

The museum uses the halls to show Shanxi's building heritage: models, components such as bracket sets and roof ornaments, stone carvings, steles and glazed tiles rescued from demolished or damaged sites. Exhibitions change, and we could not confirm the 2026 line-up. If you are about to tour the timber temples of Datong, the Pingyao area or the south, an hour here explains the parts you will be looking at.

If old buildings are not your interest, the courtyards are still a pleasant, quiet break in the middle of the city. But this is the most skippable of Taiyuan's main sights.

How do tickets and hours work?

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai):

  • Ticket: 30 yuan full price, 15 yuan half price. Seniors 60 and over, children under 6, people with disabilities and active military enter free. Minors and students up to undergraduate level pay half.
  • Hours (3 June–31 October 2026): Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:30, last entry 17:00.
  • Closed Mondays, except public holidays.
  • Phone: 0351-5282802.

Hours after 31 October were not published when we checked. Official notices win.

How do you get there?

The address is 1 Qifeng Street (起凤街1号), Yingze District, close to Wuyi Square in the centre. Taxis are easiest. City buses to Wuyi Square stop a short walk away.

How does it fit into a day?

It sits neatly between the Twin Pagodas (south-east) and the old-town shops and noodle restaurants nearby. A good loop: museum or Jinci in the morning, then Chunyang Palace in the afternoon and the Twin Pagodas in late light, with dinner in the centre (noodles and vinegar guide). See the two-day plan.
