Yanmen Pass (雁门关) is worth half a day if you want a Great Wall pass in a real mountain setting rather than a restored city wall. Tickets are 90 yuan from April to October and 60 yuan off-season. The official notice gives 8:00–18:00 until 31 October and 8:30–17:30 from 1 November. Come by car from Daixian.
Why does this pass matter?
For two thousand years Yanmen guarded the main route between the North China Plain and the steppe. Armies came through, and so did generals, princesses sent north in marriage alliances and traders. Chinese poetry and opera return to it constantly. What you visit today is a restored pass complex on the saddle: a gate tower, a fortified village, temples and walls running up the ridges on either side. A lot of it is rebuilt. The setting is not, and that is what you came for.
What should you see?
The gate and tower. Walk through the main gate, read the inscriptions, and climb to the gatehouse terrace for the view down both valleys.
The ridge walls. The best part of the visit is walking a stretch of wall uphill away from the gate. Crowds thin quickly, and the walls give you the scale of the defence line. Go only as far as your legs want. It is steep in places.
The pass village and temples. Small courtyards, a temple to the Han general Li Mu (李牧) and exhibits on the pass's history. They are a gentle way to end the visit.
Allow three to four hours including the walk up the wall. Spring and autumn are best. Winter on the saddle is cold and windy.
How do you get there?
The pass is north of the Daixian (代县) county town. Its operator lists three road approaches. The usual one leaves the expressway at the Daixian exit and follows the Guannan tourist road (关南旅游专线) about 15 km north to the south entrance. The others come in from Xinguangwu or Yangmingbao via the Daixian North interchange. In early October 2026 the scenic area advised using the south gate when the north car park was full. Daixian has a railway station. From there, or from Xinzhou, take a taxi or hire a car. Public transport to the pass itself is not something to rely on.
Yanmen sits between the Wutai Shan area and Shuozhou. It fits a north-south drive between Yingxian's wooden pagoda and Wutai Shan, or a day from Xinzhou.

Is it better than the Great Wall near Beijing?
It is different. It is emptier, more remote and tied to a single strategic pass rather than a long walkable wall. If you have already walked Datong's city wall, Yanmen shows the frontier that wall was built to back up. The three-day plan treats it as an optional add-on day.
