Distillery, Painted Temples, Yellow River: A Three-Day Lüliang Loop from Taiyuan

Day one in Fenyang for the Fenjiu distillery and Taifu Temple, day two west to Qikou for the old street and Heilong Temple at dusk, day three Lijiashan at first light before the afternoon coach back to Taiyuan.

Cave houses and courtyards scattered down a loess hillside at Lijiashan, with green terraces and the Lüliang hills behind.

Spend day one in Fenyang for the Fenjiu distillery and Taifu Temple. On day two, head west to Qikou for the old street and Heilong Temple at dusk. On day three, see Lijiashan at first light, then take the afternoon coach back to Taiyuan. It is a loop that saves the Yellow River for the end.

Who is this for?

It suits travellers who have already done Datong or Pingyao and want a quieter Shanxi: loess hills, cave villages and village temples, without ticket queues. It assumes Taiyuan as the gateway. You can start just as easily from Pingyao, which is about half an hour from Xinghuacun by road.

Day 1 — Fenyang: liquor and hanging sculpture

Morning. Take an intercity train from Taiyuan South to Fenyang (under an hour on the fastest trains; check 12306). Taxi to the Fenjiu Culture Scenic Area for opening and give it two to three hours.

Lunch. Fenyang is known as a cooks' town. Order local dishes rather than hunting for a famous name.

Afternoon. Taifu Temple after its reported midday break (it is said to reopen around 15:00 and close on Mondays, so check). If there is time and a willing driver, add Tiancun Houtu Temple.

Night. Sleep in Fenyang town or Xinghuacun.

Day 2 — West to the Yellow River

Morning. Hired car or taxi from Fenyang to Qikou. Allow a good part of the morning, since it means crossing the Lüliang hills via Lishi. A driver who knows the route is worth paying for. If you prefer public transport, see the transport options.

Afternoon. Check into a Qikou inn and walk the old street. Add Xiwan village if you like courtyards.

Late afternoon. Climb to Heilong Temple for the river bend in low sun. Dinner in town.

Day 3 — Lijiashan, then back

Early. Hired car up to Lijiashan for the viewpoint and lanes before day visitors arrive. Two to three hours.

Midday. Back to Qikou for lunch and a last look at the landing.

Afternoon. Direct coach to Taiyuan on the reported 14:30 or 16:30 departure (book in the "山西文旅行" mini-program), about four hours.

What can you cut or swap?

  • Two days only: drop Fenyang. Coach Taiyuan → Qikou on day one, Lijiashan on the morning of day two, coach back.
  • Temple-heavy: spend all of day one on Fenyang's three temples and skip the distillery. You will need a car for Beiyuyuan.
  • Coming from Pingyao: start day one by road from Pingyao to Xinghuacun instead of by train from Taiyuan.
  • Heading north afterwards: Taiyuan connects on to Datong's three-day plan.

What should you check?

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Times and fares above come from the linked pieces and their sources: the Fenjiu official page, 12306 timetables and the August 2026 coach launch report. Official notices win, especially for village temples, whose opening depends on caretakers, and for the coach, whose times can change by season.
