Worth it if you are curious about baijiu. The Fenjiu Culture Scenic Area (汾酒文化景区) at Xinghuacun (杏花村), about 15 km from Fenyang, is a working distillery tour covering a museum, fermentation halls, old cellars and a tasting. The official ticket is 42 yuan. Budget two to three hours, and leave the car keys with someone else.
Why is Xinghua Village famous?
Every Chinese schoolchild knows the late-Tang poet Du Mu (杜牧) and his line about a herd boy pointing to "Apricot Blossom Village" (杏花村) when asked where to find a tavern. Whether Du Mu meant this village is still argued over. Fenyang has claimed the name for a long time, and the Fenjiu Group built a brand on it. Fenjiu (汾酒) is the textbook example of light-aroma (清香型) baijiu: cleaner and less pungent than the strong-aroma spirits of Sichuan. Its traditional brewing technique was on the first national intangible heritage list in 2006.
What do you actually see?
The Fenyang government's own summary lists the Fenjiu museum, a reconstructed old production line, the working fermentation halls, a bottling line, the aged-liquor cellars with their huge storage vessels, the Zuixian Pavilion (醉仙楼) and the factory gardens. In practice the best parts are the halls, which smell of steamed sorghum, and the cellars. The museum is dense with labels and benefits from a guide. Ctrip's listing mentions a paid guide service and an optional sightseeing cart, both extra to the ticket.
The tasting is small. If you want more, the shop sells everything from everyday bottles to collector series. Chinese customs and airline limits apply to what you carry home.
How does it fit into a day?
Xinghuacun is on the expressway between Taiyuan and Lishi. The official page says it is about an hour from Taiyuan and half an hour from Pingyao by road. The cleanest pairing is with Fenyang's painted temples. Taifu Temple is in a village close by. Do the distillery in the morning and the temples after lunch, or the reverse if you want to finish on a drink. Fenyang Station on the Taiyuan–Lüliang intercity line puts the area within reach without a car. You will still need a taxi for the last stretch.
Tickets and hours — what should you check?
Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). The Fenjiu Group's official visitor page (fenjiu.com.cn) wins over third-party listings. Some of those still show older, higher prices.
- Ticket: 42 yuan per person (official page).
- Hours: summer 8:00–18:30, winter 8:00–18:00. Ticket checks stop half an hour before closing.
- Concessions: the official page lists half price for minors over 6, full-time students and some seniors, and free entry for small children, disabled visitors, serving military and others. Its two lists disagree on seniors (60+ appears under both), so bring ID and ask at the counter.
- Phone: visitor enquiries 0358-7229217 (official page).
Who should skip it?
Skip it if you don't drink, or if factory tours bore you. Fenyang's temples will give you more for the time. If you are moving between Pingyao and Qikou, though, it is an easy and memorable stop on the way. See the three-day Lüliang plan.
