Hanging Sculpture, a Yellow River Gorge and a Glazed Pagoda: Three Days Based in Linfen

Base in Linfen and run three day-trips: Xiaoxitian in Xi county, Hukou Waterfall, and Hongdong's Guangsheng Temple with the Big Locust Tree; add Yao Temple or Ding Village if a slot opens.

The G22 expressway between Linfen and Hukou running toward a tunnel through loess hills.

Sleep in Linfen for three nights and run three day trips: Little Western Heaven in Xi county on day one, Hukou Waterfall on day two, and Guangsheng Temple with the Hongdong Big Locust Tree on day three. Use Yao Temple or Ding Village to fill an arrival afternoon or a short day.

Why base in Linfen, not move around?

The sights are scattered in different directions, and the tourist coaches start and end in the city and at Linfen West station. One hotel near the station or the centre saves you packing every morning. Xi county and Ji county have places to stay, and an overnight there buys you an earlier start at the site. But for a first trip, the city base is simpler.

Day 0 (arrival): an easy afternoon

Arrive by high-speed train at Linfen West. If you land by early afternoon, go to Yao Temple for an hour, then eat. Book the next two days' coaches tonight if you have not already; operators ask for a day's notice.

Day 1: Xiaoxitian

Take the morning tourist coach to Xi county; one operator lists a 7:30 start, arrival around 10:30 and departure at 13:00. Spend your time in the Mahavira Hall rather than racing the whole hillside. See how to see Xiaoxitian for booking, which is real-name and can sell out. Back in Linfen by mid-afternoon, rest. The temple closes on the last day of each month, and on 30 October 2026, so do not put this day there.

Day 2: Hukou Waterfall

Morning coach from Linfen West, about two hours each way, about two hours at the falls. See Hukou from the Ji county side for the two-bank ticket and season. Bring a rain layer for the spray. If the river is low or the weather bad, swap days 2 and 3.

Day 3: Hongdong

Train or taxi to Hongdong. Do Guangsheng Temple in the morning, both Upper and Lower temples, about two to three hours. Then the Big Locust Tree site after lunch, close to Hongdong station. Continue north by train toward Taiyuan or Pingyao from Hongdong or Hongdong West, or head back to Linfen.

What if you only have two days?

Keep Xiaoxitian and Hongdong, and drop Hukou unless big landscapes matter more to you than art. If you have four days, add Ding Village on a Tuesday-to-Sunday morning.

Where does this fit in a Shanxi trip?

Linfen sits in the south of the province. A common line is Datong in the north (see the Datong three-day plan), then Taiyuan or Pingyao, then Linfen, all on the same north–south rail corridor. Go on south from here to Yuncheng or Xi'an, or east to Jincheng.

What should you check before you go?

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Each site's official account or on-site notice wins over this plan. Coach times are from an operator's listing and change by season; confirm when you book. Hukou's gates open at 7:30 from September 2026. Guangsheng runs winter hours of about 8:00–18:00. Ding Village closes on Mondays. Keep a passport with you for real-name tickets.
