One Ticket, Two Banks: Seeing Hukou Waterfall from the Ji County Side

Hukou Waterfall's Shanxi bank, in Ji county, now shares one 80-yuan ticket with the Shaanxi bank for two days; go in summer or autumn flow, arrive early, and expect a long road from Linfen.

Hukou Waterfall (壶口瀑布) is the Yellow River squeezing into a narrow rock trough, and from June 2026 one ticket, 80 yuan, covers both the Shanxi bank in Ji county and the Shaanxi bank for two days. Come between summer and autumn when the flow is strong, arrive early, and budget most of a day from Linfen.

What is Hukou like?

The river is several hundred metres wide upstream, then funnels into a gorge a few dozen metres across and drops into a slot in the riverbed. The water is the colour of the loess it carries. On a good day you get roaring brown water, spray that local writers describe as smoke rising off the river, and sometimes a rainbow. On a weak day, it is still a big river in a dramatic channel, but less of a spectacle.

The Shanxi side, in Hukou town, Ji county, is usually described as the one for the wide, full-front view. The Shaanxi side, in Yichuan county, gets you nearer to the detail. Now that the ticket covers both, you can choose by where you are coming from, not by price.

When should you go?

Flow follows the season. It is strongest after summer rain, and autumn is often the comfortable compromise between water and crowds. Chinese holiday weekends, especially Golden Week in early October, are best avoided: the roads in jam. In deep winter the falls can freeze into ice, which has its own following, but the cold is serious. Water levels change from week to week, so look at recent photos on the scenic account before committing to the drive.

How do you get there?

Hukou is about 45 km beyond Ji county town, along winding mountain roads. Most travellers without a car use a day-return tourist coach from Linfen West: one operator lists around two hours each way and about two hours at the falls. See getting around Linfen without a car. Drivers should take the new route through Ji county rather than the old road, and keep their distance on dusty bends.

How long do you need on site?

Two hours is enough for the main viewing terraces on the Shanxi side, including the walk down to the water. Crossing to the Shaanxi bank adds time and transport. Most coach visitors stay on the Shanxi side; the two-day validity matters more if you sleep nearby.

Tickets, hours and safety — what should you check?

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). The official Hukou Waterfall site (hukouwaterfall.com) and its WeChat account “山西黄河壶口瀑布旅游区” win over any listing.

Ticket. 80 yuan adult, 40 yuan students and minors aged 7–18; buy on either bank, valid two days on both. Free first-gate entry for children 6 and under or 1.2 m and under, and for visitors 60 and over with passport or ID. Bring ID: the gate checks it with the QR code.

Scenic transport. On the Shanxi side, 16 yuan return or 8 yuan single.

Hours. From 1 September 2026, the gates open at 7:30 and ticket checks stop at 18:00 (relayed by Linfen Bendibao). In busy periods entry is managed in time slots, so book online ahead.

Phone. 0357-7955000 is listed for the Shanxi side.

Safety. Stay behind the railings. The rock near the edge is wet and the spray soaks cameras; a cheap rain poncho is worth carrying.

Is it worth the day?

If you have only two days in Linfen and care more about art than landscape, put Xiaoxitian and Guangsheng ahead of Hukou. If you want one big natural sight on a Shanxi trip that is otherwise all temples, as a contrast to Hengshan near Datong, Hukou is the one.
