Walls, Temples, One Mansion: A Three-Day Pingyao Base Plan

Three days based in Pingyao: Day 1 the walls and banks on the combo ticket, Day 2 the old-town core plus Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples, Day 3 a car day to Wang Family Courtyard with Houtu Temple and Zhangbi — or Qiao on the way out.

Three days based in Pingyao: Day 1 on the wall and the draft banks with the three-day combo ticket. Day 2 on the old-town core in the morning and Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples in the afternoon. Day 3 by car to the Wang Family Courtyard, Houtu Temple and Zhangbi Fortress, or Qiao on your way out.

This sequence takes advantage of the combo ticket lasting three days and keeps each day trip to one direction. Stay inside the walls if you can (see where to stay), so mornings and evenings in the old town cost you no travel time.

Day 1: Arrive, Wall, Banks

Morning: Get in and drop bags

Take a high-speed train to Pingyao Gucheng and a taxi to the nearest gate, or a conventional train to Pingyao Station and walk (see getting to Pingyao). Make your free real-name entry reservation on the scenic area's WeChat account before you arrive, then buy the combo ticket on the same account.

Afternoon: Wall, Rishengchang, Xietongqing

Climb at the south gate and walk one long stretch of the wall. Come down for Rishengchang and the Xietongqing vault on West Street. Stop there: one or two banks seen properly beat five in a row. Watch the closing time. In winter hours, sites shut at 17:30 and checks end 15 minutes earlier. Details are in how to see the ancient city.

Evening: Lanes and a first meal

Cold Pingyao beef, wantuo and a bowl of noodles a lane or two off South Street (see what to eat). If you want to watch the 21:00 light show at the south gate, remember that the gate itself closes at 20:00 in autumn 2026, so go round by another gate.

Day 2: Old-Town Core, Then Two Temples

Morning: Yamen, Confucian Temple, City God Temple

Catch a yamen performance (listed at 9:30, 11:00 and 15:30), then walk east to the Confucian Temple and City God Temple. Add one escort-agency museum only if you are curious. Have an early lunch.

Afternoon: Shuanglin and Zhenguo

Taxi to Shuanglin, then on to Zhenguo, or choose just one. Buy separate tickets, since they are not on the combo ticket. Both main halls are half-closed for restoration (Zhenguo to August 2027, Shuanglin to August 2028), so see the other halls and the eaves without expecting the famous statues. Read Shuanglin and Zhenguo first.

Evening: Back inside the walls

Kaolaolao or a shared nuanguo hot pot. The combo ticket still has a day on it, so if you missed a site, plan to see it tomorrow morning.

Day 3: One Direction by Car

Option A (recommended): Jingsheng and Zhangbi

Hire a car for the day through your inn. Zhangbi Fortress in the morning for the village and tunnels, then the Wang Family Courtyard in Jingsheng after lunch. Have someone call the Houtu Temple caretaker the day before, using the number posted at its gate, so the door is open when you get there. Wang sells its last tickets at 17:20 under current winter hours.

Option B: Mianshan only

Leave early and spend the whole day on the cliffs and temples. Skip everything else (see Zhangbi or Mianshan).

Option C: Qiao or Qu on the way out

If you are heading north to Taiyuan, stop at one Qixian courtyard with your luggage in the car (see Qiao vs Qu), then catch a train from Taiyuan South.

How do you move between stops?

Inside the walls, on foot. For the temples, take a taxi. For Day 3, hire a car with a driver. Buses exist, but we could not confirm current timetables for any of the day-trip routes, and missing a return bus costs more than the car. Agree the stops, waiting time and price in writing before you leave.

When should you go, and what must you re-check?

April–June and September–October have the best weather for walking. Pingyao gets crowded around the October National Day holiday and the Spring Festival. Winters are cold, and old courtyard rooms may be poorly heated.

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Recheck the following, and let official notices win: entry reservation and combo-ticket hours on the Pingyao scenic WeChat account, restoration status at the two temples, Wang Family Courtyard hours on "智游灵石", and train times on 12306. If you are travelling on from Datong, this plan works after the Datong three-day sequence, changing trains at Taiyuan.
