Entering Pingyao Ancient City (平遥古城) is free with a real-name reservation; the combo ticket — 125 yuan full price, valid three days, one entry per site — is what opens the city wall, Rishengchang (日升昌) and 20 other sites. Pace it over a day and a half: wall and banks first, yamen and temples next, lanes at dusk.
What does the combo ticket actually cover?
The scenic area's own visitor notes list 22 sites on one ticket: the city wall, the county yamen (县衙), Rishengchang, the Confucian Temple (文庙), the City God Temple (城隍庙), Qingxu Daoist Temple (清虚观), the escort-agency museums, several other old banks such as Xietongqing (协同庆) and Baichuantong (百川通), and a handful of merchant houses. Each site punches once. Once you have scanned in, that site is done for the life of the ticket.
What it does not cover matters just as much. Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples outside the walls are sold separately, and so is the evening show Encore Pingyao (又见平遥). Walking Ming–Qing Street (明清街), South Street and the side lanes costs nothing. If you only want the street scene, you can skip the ticket. The wall and the banks are the reason to buy it.
Is the wall worth it, and where do you get on?
Yes. The wall is what makes Pingyao legible. From the top you see a town that never spilled far past its own rampart, with courtyard roofs packed tight in a grid. The scenic notes suggest climbing at the south gate, Yingxun Gate (迎薰门), early or late in the day when the light is low. Walk one long stretch rather than trying to finish a loop under midday sun. You get the same view at three-quarter length and keep your legs for the lanes.
If you have already done Datong's rebuilt wall circuit, expect a different feel. Pingyao's rampart wraps a town people still live in, so the view down is laundry and courtyards, not a restored boulevard.
Why does Rishengchang matter, and how long do you need there?
Rishengchang opened in the early nineteenth century as one of China's first piaohao (票号) — draft banks that let merchants move money between cities on paper instead of carting silver. That trade is why a county town this size has so many solid courtyard compounds. Inside you get counters, ledgers, the coded-draft system, and back rooms where the managers lived. Forty-five minutes is enough. Pair it with Xietongqing, whose underground vault gives the banking story some physical weight, and stop there. Five banks in a row will start to blur.
How should you pace a day and a half?
Afternoon of arrival. Wall from the south gate, then Rishengchang and Xietongqing along West Street before the 15-minute stop-check before closing.
Next morning. The yamen (performances are scheduled through the day; the scenic notes list 9:30, 11:00 and 15:30), then the Confucian Temple and City God Temple, which sit close together on the east side. Lunch, then one escort-agency museum if you are curious and otherwise a slow walk.
Dusk both days. Lanes away from South Street, when tour groups thin out and lanterns come on. The combo ticket is valid for three days, so you can add Shuanglin and Zhenguo or a courtyard day trip without buying it twice. The three-day plan lays that out.
Hours, tickets and booking — what should you check?
Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). The Pingyao Ancient City scenic area's official visitor notes (pygc.com) and its WeChat account “平遥古城景区官方服务平台” win over any listing, including this one.
Entry. Free, but reserve in advance under your real name on that WeChat account and carry the ID you booked with. Foreign visitors can use their passport.
Combo ticket. 125 yuan full, about 65 yuan for students and minors aged 6–18; free for under-6s or children under 1.2 m and visitors 60 and over, with ID. Valid three days, one entry per site.
Hours. From 9 October 2026, the sites (including Shuanglin and Zhenguo) run winter hours of 8:00–17:30, with ticket checks stopping 15 minutes before each site closes (Jinzhong Bendibao relaying the scenic notice, updated 9 October 2026). Summer hours run later. The free 3D light show at Yingxun Gate was moved to 21:00, and the gate itself shuts at 20:00, so walk around via the Lower East or Small South gate to watch it.
Phone. Scenic enquiries are commonly listed as 0354-5690000.
Who should skip the ticket?
If you only have one evening, have no interest in banking history, or are travelling with small children who will not climb the wall, the free lanes and a dinner are a fair visit. Everyone else should buy it, climb the wall, see one bank properly, and save the next morning for the yamen. That is enough to understand why the town looks the way it does. For getting in, read which Pingyao station to use. For where to sleep, see inside the walls or out.
