Two Stations, One Walled Town: Getting to Pingyao from Taiyuan, Beijing or Xi'an

High-speed trains stop at Pingyao Gucheng station, about 8–10 km from the walls, with bus 108 or a taxi to the gates; slower trains use Pingyao station, a short walk from the west gate — pick by train type, not by name.

Pingyao has two stations. High-speed trains use Pingyao Gucheng (平遥古城站), roughly 8–10 km from the walls, so you finish by bus 108 or taxi. Slower conventional trains use Pingyao Station (平遥站), a 10–15 minute walk from the Lower West Gate. From Taiyuan South the fast hop is well under an hour. Beijing and Xi'an are direct high-speed rides.

Which station is which?

The names trip people up. Pingyao Gucheng means "Pingyao Ancient City", yet it is the newer high-speed station out in the fields east of town. Pingyao Station is the old conventional rail station, and it sits much closer to the walls. Your ticket names the station, so read it carefully. Taxi drivers know both, but say 古城站 or 平遥站 clearly when you leave.

You do not choose a station so much as a train. High-speed G and D services use Gucheng. K, T and other conventional trains use the old station. If a cheap overnight train from far away fits your plan, you get dropped almost at the gate. If you are coming from Taiyuan, Beijing or Xi'an by day, you will probably take high-speed rail and do the last stretch by road.

How do you get from each station to the walls?

From Pingyao Gucheng (HSR). Bus 108 runs between the station and the old town, with southern and northern variants. Travel guides describe the southern route ending near the big south gate and the northern one heading toward the north gate and Shuanglin Temple. Check the destination board before boarding. Expect roughly 15–30 minutes. A taxi is faster and saves dragging luggage from a bus stop. If your inn is inside the walls, ask it about pickup before you arrive, because cars cannot simply drive to the door (see where to stay).

From Pingyao Station (conventional). Walk east about 600–700 m to the Lower West Gate (下西门). It is flat, but the last stretch inside the walls is stone paving, which is hard on small suitcase wheels.

How do you get there from Taiyuan?

Taiyuan South (太原南) to Pingyao Gucheng is the short, frequent hop. The quickest scheduled trains on Trip.com/Ctrip timetables take a little over half an hour, and most take under an hour. Conventional trains from Taiyuan Station to Pingyao Station also exist and take longer. If you fly into Taiyuan Wusu Airport, getting to Taiyuan South first and taking the train is usually simpler than a long car ride.

How do you get there from Beijing or Xi'an?

Beijing. Direct high-speed trains run from Beijing West to Pingyao Gucheng. The quickest services listed on Ctrip in October 2026 took about 3 hours 40 minutes, and slower ones take longer. If times do not suit, take a train to Taiyuan South and change. Overnight conventional trains to Pingyao Station are slower (roughly 9–12 hours on listings), but they save a night's lodging.

Xi'an. Direct high-speed trains run from Xi'an North to Pingyao Gucheng. The fastest listed in October 2026 took about 2.5 hours. This is the natural link if you are coming from the Terracotta Warriors side of the trip.

From Datong. There is no single-seat fast route that beats changing at Taiyuan, so plan Datong → Taiyuan → Pingyao. That makes a natural north-to-south route after the three-day Datong sequence.

What should you check before you book?

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). China Railway's 12306 app and website win on times and fares. Third-party apps (Trip.com/Ctrip) are convenient, but they resell the same 12306 inventory. Durations above are the fastest listed services, not averages, so check your own train. Foreign passport holders can book on 12306 or through agents, and must show the same passport at the gates.

Leave a buffer if you also need to reserve entry to the old town (free, real-name, on the scenic area's WeChat account) and buy the combo ticket (see how to see the ancient city). Late-evening arrivals at Gucheng should book a taxi or inn pickup ahead. Do not assume a bus will still be running, because we could not confirm the last 108 departure from an official timetable.

Which arrival makes the most sense?

For most people: high-speed train to Gucheng in the morning or early afternoon, taxi to the nearest gate, and the wall before dusk. The old station only wins if you are already on a conventional train or want to walk in with a light bag. Neither choice is wrong. The mistakes are booking "Pingyao" without noticing which station it is, or planning to haul a large suitcase across stone lanes at night.
