Half a Day Underground or a Full Day on the Cliffs: Zhangbi Fortress and Mianshan from Pingyao
Zhangbi Fortress is a compact walled village with old defensive tunnels — about half a day; Mianshan is a large cliff-and-temple mountain that wants a full day or more — from Pingyao, do Zhangbi plus Wang Family Courtyard, or Mianshan alone.

Both are in Jiexiu (介休), south of Pingyao, but they are different sizes of day. Zhangbi Fortress (张壁古堡) is a small walled village with old defensive tunnels underneath. It takes about half a day and pairs easily with the Wang Family Courtyard. Mianshan (绵山) is a cliff-and-temple mountain that needs a full day on its own.
What is Zhangbi Fortress?
A fortified village on a loess ridge on the northern edge of the Mian mountains, about 10 km southeast of Jiexiu town. The scenic company dates its origins to the Northern Dynasties, and it is a national key protected site. The village is enclosed by thick rammed-earth walls, with gates leading onto a main street, side lanes and courtyards. People still live in parts of it, and there are some small temples, including one with old blue-glazed steles above the north gate.
What makes it stand out is underground. A network of tunnels on several levels runs beneath the village, with niches for storing grain, wells and guard rooms. The entrance is inside the Kehan Temple (可罕庙) courtyard. A tunnel loop takes about 50 minutes according to a July 2026 Qunar guide. It is narrow, dim and uneven, so it is not for anyone uneasy in tight spaces. Allow three to four hours in total, including the tunnels.
What is Mianshan?
A mountain scenic area about 20 km southeast of Jiexiu, steeply cliffed and spread out, with temples and walkways built into rock faces. It is tied to the story of Jie Zitui, the loyal retainer whose legend is linked to the Cold Food Festival (寒食节), and Jiexiu takes its name from him. The site is large, with separate valleys and temple groups linked by roads and paths. Ctrip's listing suggests two days to see it properly, and there are hotels inside the scenic area.
It is heavily developed, with rebuilt and new temples among the older remains, crowds at peak times and many steps. If you want cliffside architecture and big views, it delivers. If you want quiet old buildings, Shuanglin and Zhenguo or Houtu Temple will suit you better.
Zhangbi, Mianshan, or both?
- Zhangbi + Wang Family Courtyard (by car): a full, varied day of a fortress village in the morning and a hillside mansion in the afternoon. This is the best Jiexiu–Lingshi combination for most visitors.
- Mianshan alone: one full day, starting early. Do not add anything else unless you have a car and only want a quick look at Zhangbi on the way back.
- Both Zhangbi and Mianshan: they are close to each other, so it is possible, but Mianshan gets cut down to a sampler. Only worth it if you are staying overnight near Mianshan.
How do you get there from Pingyao?
High-speed trains stop at Jiexiu East, and conventional trains stop at Jiexiu Station. Travel accounts describe local buses from Jiexiu to Zhangbi (route 4) and toward the Wang Family Courtyard, as well as a Mianshan shuttle from Jiexiu, but we could not confirm current timetables. The practical option from Pingyao is a hired car for the day, which you can arrange through many inns, or a train to Jiexiu and taxis from there. Agree the stops and waiting time before you set off.
Tickets, hours and phone — what should you check?
Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

With winter hours now likely in effect, plan to arrive by early afternoon. Phone 0354-7086156 or 400-116-1600. Jiexiu residents enter free.
Mianshan. We did not find a stable official ticket page, so these figures are a visible downgrade to Ctrip's listing. Hours: 7:30–18:30 from 1 April to 31 October and 8:00–18:00 from 1 November to 31 March. Ticket prices are listed lower in the off-season than in peak season. Check the current price and any extra charge for transport inside the scenic area when you book, because we could not confirm them. Ticket enquiry lines listed: 0354-7055111, 0354-7055055.
Who should go?
Zhangbi suits anyone who enjoyed the walls of Pingyao and wants to see a defended village on a smaller scale, plus some time underground. Mianshan suits travellers who want scenery and cliff temples and have a full day to spare. If you have three days in total, see where they fit in the three-day plan.
