Sculpture, Timber, Canyon: A Three-Day Changzhi Plan

Three days in Changzhi: day one Guanyin Hall plus the Zhangzi temples, day two the Pingshun valley timber halls, day three the Taihang Grand Canyon; base in the city, hire a car, and keep Guanyin Hall flexible.

Three days in Changzhi works best as one direction per day from a city base. Day one: Guanyin Hall plus the Zhangzi temples. Day two: the Pingshun valley timber halls. Day three: the Taihang Grand Canyon. Hire a car and driver, or rent a car if you can drive in China, and keep Guanyin Hall flexible, since it closed for part of 2026.

Where should you stay?

Stay in Changzhi city, near the centre or towards Changzhi East station. The three days run in three different directions, so the city is the natural hub, with plenty of mid-range hotels and food. The one exception: if you want an early start at the canyon or two canyon days, spend night three near the Baquanxia gates instead of driving back. See getting to Changzhi for arrival.

Day 1 — Sculpture and the game temples

  • Morning: Leave by 8:30 for Zhangzi county. Start at Faxing Temple (the Song twelve bodhisattvas, the Tang stone pagoda), then Chongqing Temple on Ziyun Hill for the arhats and the underworld hall. Details: Chongqing and Faxing temples.
  • Lunch: Zhangzi chaobing in town (food guide).
  • Afternoon: Back to the city's southern edge for Guanyin Hall. Early afternoon light suits the hall.
  • Evening: Dinner in the centre.

This is also the Black Myth: Wukong route. If Guanyin Hall is closed when you call, give the afternoon to a slower Faxing visit or rest before the long day two.

Day 2 — The Zhuozhang valley

  • Leave before 9:00 and head east towards Lucheng and Pingshun.
  • Morning: Tiantai An and Yuanqi Temple. Phone caretakers where gates are locked.
  • Lunch: Farmhouse noodles near Dayun Yuan.
  • Afternoon: Dayun Yuan, then Longmen Temple up its side valley. Add Jiutian Shengmu, Fotou or Chunhua if you have time and energy.
  • Back to Changzhi in the evening.

Ask at the first ticketed site about the seven-day Pingshun–Lucheng pass. More in the Pingshun valley guide.

Day 3 — The Taihang Grand Canyon

  • Early start south-east to Huguan.
  • Full day at Baquanxia: bus, boat, plank paths, the lift and the cableway to the rim.
  • Alternative: Hongdouxia for a shorter, cheaper walking day.

The gate ticket is free from 15 October to 30 November 2026, but budget for the boat and cableway package. Read the canyon guide before you go, and check weather, which can halt the boats and cableway.

What if you only have one or two days?

  • One day: Day 1 as written. It gives you the best sculpture and is the most practical by taxi.
  • Two days: Day 1, then choose Day 2 (timber, for architecture lovers) or Day 3 (canyon, for everyone else).
  • Four days: add a second canyon day using the two-day ticket, or a slow morning in the city before your train.

What should you check each evening?

Checked October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Confirm the next day's opening by phone or WeChat, especially Guanyin Hall and the Pingshun caretaker sites. For the canyon, check the weather. For your onward train, check 12306. Official notices win over this plan.

Where next?

Changzhi links north by high-speed rail to Taiyuan and south to Zhengzhou. Heading north, Taiyuan connects you to Pingyao and Datong. The Datong three-day plan pairs well with this one for a full Shanxi route.
