If you know Black Myth: Wukong, the travel payoff in China is not a boss checklist — it is a short set of Shanxi ancient-architecture sites that shaped the game’s look and that you can still walk into as an ordinary traveler.

Why the game points to real destinations
Black Myth: Wukong is the foreign hot signal. Its art direction drew heavily on northern China’s temple and cliff architecture — especially in Shanxi, a province dense with surviving timber halls, cliff temples, and cave complexes. Journey to the West and Sun Wukong explain why a monkey king story world feels familiar, but they are background only: keep the novel light, and do not treat this page as a literary intro.
You do not need a walkthrough, a character roster, or a chapter-by-chapter plot to decide where to go. The useful question is which buildings and landscapes still stand for a traveler who wants the same visual charge the game borrowed.
Hours and ticket figures below were checked against official or government-cited notices on 2026-10-15 (Asia/Shanghai). Official pages and scenic WeChat / mini-program notices win — re-confirm the morning you travel, because seasons, holidays, and conservation limits change.
Places worth putting on a map
Hanging Temple / Xuankong Si (悬空寺). A cliff-side temple complex near Hunyuan, south of Datong, that travelers can visit and that is widely cited among the game’s real-world architecture references. The walkways cling to a sheer face above a gorge; the scale is smaller than the screenshots suggest, but the engineered precariousness is the point. For day-trip worth-it judgment and how to pair it with a Datong base, see the Hanging Temple city piece.

- Official: Beiyue Hengshan Scenic Area (Chinese; scenic operator for Hanging Temple) · English site · Hanging Temple product page · Ticket guide
- Hours (autumn, from 2026-10-08): about 08:00–17:00 for Hanging Temple check-in, per Shanxi government WeChat “山西发布” roundup of scenic autumn hours (relayed by 新黄河 / Jinantimes, 2026-10-08). Earlier 2026 summer-style windows were longer; holidays can shift again.
- Tickets: full adult ¥15 park admission + ¥100 climbing/ascent fee (about ¥115 combined); half-price ¥8 + ¥50. Climbing tickets are capped daily and often sell out — book via the authorized “北岳云游” mini-program (see operator notices on byhs.net.cn).
- Last checked: 2026-10-15. Official scenic pages and WeChat win; re-confirm before travel.
Yungang Grottoes (云冈石窟), Datong. Monumental Buddhist cave temples on the western edge of Datong: vast rock-cut Buddhas, painted chambers, and a corridor of caves you can walk in sequence. They sit in the same Shanxi corridor the game’s art direction evokes — verifiable ancient architecture, not a theme-park recreation. For cave pacing and a day-worth judgment once you are in Datong, see the Yungang Grottoes city piece.

- Official / heritage: UNESCO World Heritage listing · National Cultural Heritage Administration brief (Chinese). Day-to-day tickets and hours: Yungang Research Academy notices via WeChat “云冈石窟” / mini-programs “云冈石窟文旅” and “云冈研究院” (cited in Datong 12345 and Academy holiday notices).
- Hours (from 2026-10-08): about 08:30–16:30, stop entry after 16:30 (山西发布 via 新黄河). National Day 2026 used a longer temporary window; do not assume holiday hours in mid-October.
- Tickets: peak season (commonly 1 Apr–31 Oct) about ¥120 adult / ¥60 child–student; off-season about ¥100 / ¥50 (Datong media / Academy visitor guides, e.g. Datong Daily). Advance real-name booking — often up to 15 days ahead, including free-ticket categories.
- Last checked: 2026-10-15. Official Academy / WeChat / mini-program notices win; re-confirm before travel.
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (应县木塔). In Ying County, the tall timber pagoda (Fogong Temple Sakyamuni Pagoda) is a concrete, visitable landmark often discussed alongside Shanxi’s wooden-architecture heritage that informed the game’s world. It is a freestanding tower you can approach on foot; pair it with Datong if you are already in northern Shanxi. For what you actually see and whether the climb is worth it today, see the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda city piece. For a Datong overnight → Yingxian day-return path, see the one-day Yingxian itinerary.

- Official / heritage: UNESCO Tentative List entry (Wooden Pagoda of Yingxian County). Local operator notices are posted via scenic WeChat “应县木塔景区” and republished on Shuozhou government open information. Phone commonly listed: 0349-5088889.
- Hours: seasonal. A Shuozhou-published scenic notice set autumn hours around 08:00–17:30 (stop sale ~17:00, stop entry ~17:15); winter windows often shorten toward 08:00–17:00. 2026 Spring Festival service notices used the 08:00–17:30 pattern — treat mid-October as autumn unless the scenic account posts a winter cut.
- Tickets: about ¥50 full / ¥25 half (widely cited on authorized “游山西” booking channels and local tourism guides). Book via scenic WeChat / 游山西 / authorized platforms.
- Last checked: 2026-10-15. Scenic WeChat and Shuozhou-posted notices win; re-confirm before travel.
Xiaoxitian (小西天), Xi County (隰县). A compact, richly carved temple hall (Qianfo An / Thousand-Buddha Nunnery) in Xi County (隰县), Linfen — not Lin County (临县). Often noted for dense painted sculpture and gold leaf. It is a farther swing from Datong than the three stops above, but it belongs on the same Shanxi ancient-architecture map if your route already runs west. Name it accurately; invent no /read/ link until city content exists.

What not to expect
This is not a game walkthrough, not a full Journey to the West novel guide, and not a substitute for Datong city-first reading. Use Stories to choose a place from a hot signal you already recognize; once you are there, start with the Datong cultural landscape overview for how caves, Liao–Jin timber halls, wall, and the Hanging Temple fringe sit together — then the Huayan vs Shanhua choose/read if old-city temples are next, or a three-day Datong sequence if you want visit order. For Yingxian, use the Wooden Pagoda city piece and the one-day Yingxian day-return. Xiaoxitian stays a named place here until city articles exist.
