China Haul Shopping Guide: Empty Suitcase, What to Buy, Which City

China Haul without the myths: empty-suitcase strategy, city-by-city what to buy (Shenzhen Huaqiangbei first), and when to deep-link tax refund and electronics floors — checked October 2026.

Pedestrians on Huaqiang North Road in Futian, Shenzhen, with electronics malls and storefronts lining the street.

"China Haul" is the social-media name for flying into mainland China with spare luggage space, filling it with phones, drones, AI glasses, blind boxes and domestic fashion, then unboxing the haul online. Official and English press covered the trend in October 2026 (including the South China Morning Post on 18 October). This page is the where-to-buy decision hub. For eligibility, rates and airport steps, use the China tax refund guide. For how to walk Huaqiangbei without fake closing times, use the Huaqiangbei electronics guide.

Checked October 2026. Rules and store lists change; if anything below disagrees with an STA / MOFCOM notice, a city English service page, or the counter in front of you, the official version wins. An empty suitcase is a packing choice — it is not an extra duty-free allowance.

Which city should you shop — and for what?

| City | Best for a haul | Skip or caveat | |------|-----------------|----------------| | Shenzhen | Electronics and brand flagships in and around Huaqiangbei; MixC / COCO Park / Shenzhen Bay MixC style malls with registered refund counters (see Shenzhen government English notices) | Treating every SEG stall as tax-refund eligible | | Guangzhou | Tianhe mall shopping with a verified centralized instant-refund hub at Parc Central (天環, No. 218 Tianhe Road) plus other city refund points named on Guangzhou English/service pages | Inventing Canton Fair walk-in retail access; the fair is a trade event, not a tourist wholesale pass | | Shanghai | Light brand and lifestyle haul on Nanjing Road / Huaihai corridors and other registered stores (Shanghai lists thousands of refund-upon-purchase merchants) | Expecting Shenzhen-style component density | | Yiwu | Only if you already have Mandarin help, a freight plan, and a B2B reason | Weekend tourist "become a wholesaler" fantasy — most short visitors should skip | | Wuhan | Not a haul city — go for Optics Valley / riverside sightseeing if that is your trip, not to stuff a suitcase |

Shenzhen is the primary anchor on this site because border access from Hong Kong, Huaqiangbei depth and refund coverage already have dedicated articles. Guangzhou is the natural second stop on the same southern refund-recognition region. Shanghai is optional if your itinerary already ends there.

Empty suitcase: what it does and does not do

Bring a soft bag or leave half a checked bag empty if you expect phones, drones or boxed gadgets. That is logistics: weight, unused sealed goods for refund customs checks, and room at the airport.

It does not create a special customs exemption. Your home country's personal import rules still apply. Departure tax refund still needs a registered store, the RMB 200 per store per day floor, unused goods, and exit within the scheme deadlines — all spelled out in the tax refund guide. Instant refund still needs a credit card in your own name for the pre-authorisation.

What to buy — short SKU principles only

Phones, drones, action cameras, foldables. Prefer brand flagships and other registered refund stores in Huaqiangbei over anonymous stalls. For authenticity habits and what not to buy from trays, read Huaqiangbei: what is worth buying. We do not publish a fake floor-by-floor inventory here.

AI glasses. Treat them like any other sealed gadget: buy at a store that will issue the departure tax refund form, keep the box closed until after you clear exit customs, and use instant refund only if staff offer it and you understand the card hold. This page will not invent model names, street prices or "secret stall" stock.

Pop Mart / blind boxes. Buy at official Pop Mart retail or large mall counters (Shanghai's Nanjing Road pedestrian street has a well-documented flagship; other cities have mall shops). Blind boxes are light and giftable, but the RMB 200 per store per day refund floor still applies — several small receipts at different kiosks do not combine. We do not invent queue or "hidden variant" rules.

Fashion, beauty, domestic brands. Easier in Guangzhou and Shanghai malls with clear "Tax Free" / 离境退税 signs than in Huaqiangbei component halls. Confirm the store is on the MOFCOM tax-free map before you assume a refund.

Payment without a second essay

Most malls and branded stores take foreign-linked Alipay or WeChat Pay; bigger flagships also take cards. Set the wallet up before you cross from Hong Kong — the Shenzhen day-trip page already covers that pre-check. Carry some cash for stubborn small stalls.
