Hong Kong to Shenzhen: Which Border Crossing to Use
Pick a Hong Kong–Shenzhen crossing by where you are going: Lo Wu for Luohu, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line for Futian, the new 24-hour Huanggang Port at night, Shenzhen Bay for Nanshan — checked October 2026.

Choose the crossing by where you are going in Shenzhen. Lo Wu (Luohu) puts you on Metro Line 1 in old Luohu; the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (Futian Checkpoint) is closest to Futian and Huaqiangbei; the new Huanggang Port is the only 24-hour land crossing for passengers; and Shenzhen Bay suits Nanshan and Shekou. For a downtown Futian arrival with no queue, the high-speed train from West Kowloon is the fastest option.
Checked October 2026 against the Hong Kong Immigration Department, the Shenzhen Port Office and Hong Kong government press releases. Hours and arrangements change; if anything here disagrees with an official notice, the official version wins.

Hours above are the Hong Kong Immigration Department's control point hours, matched against the Shenzhen Port Office list. Lo Wu and the Spur Line are reached on the MTR East Rail Line. Heung Yuen Wai, Shenzhen Bay and Huanggang are road crossings that you reach by bus, coach or minibus on the Hong Kong side.
What changed at Huanggang and Lok Ma Chau in October 2026?
The redeveloped Huanggang Port opened at 06:30 on 12 October 2026. It handles passengers and passenger vehicles around the clock. At the same moment, passenger clearance stopped at Hong Kong's old Lok Ma Chau Control Point (the road crossing at San Tin) and at Shenzhen's temporary Huanggang building. The yellow Lok Ma Chau–Huanggang shuttle bus to the old port ran its last trips that morning.
Do not confuse this with the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point, the MTR crossing to Futian, which still runs 06:30–22:30.
The new port uses a "collaborative inspection" mode, so you queue once for both sides instead of clearing Hong Kong, walking a bridge and clearing Shenzhen. Shenzhen authorities say it connects underground to Metro Line 7. On the Hong Kong side there is no MTR station: the government launched five franchised bus routes and three green minibus routes to the new port, plus cross-boundary coaches. Passengers in cross-border private cars now get out at a drop-off area and walk through the passenger hall with their bags.
Which crossing is best late at night?
Huanggang, because it never closes. Lo Wu and Shenzhen Bay close at midnight, and the Spur Line closes at 22:30. If you miss the last train back to Lo Wu, a taxi or Line 7 to Huanggang is your fallback.
Can I get a Shenzhen visa at the border?
Only at some crossings. The 5-day Shenzhen-only visa is widely reported to be issued at Luohu, Huanggang and Shekou, but not at Futian or Shenzhen Bay. If you are relying on it, cross at one of those three. See Shenzhen entry and visa options for which rule fits your passport.
How do I take the Shekou ferry to Hong Kong airport?
From Shekou Cruise Homeport, ferries run straight to SkyPier inside Hong Kong International Airport, so you can fly out without entering Hong Kong. On participating airlines you can check in and drop bags at Shekou. The operator's check-in desk on Level 2 opens 06:00–21:15. It recommends arriving 60 minutes before the ferry, and check-in and baggage close 30 minutes before departure. You need a ferry ticket, a confirmed flight that leaves the same day, and the right documents for your destination. Some airlines also want you at SkyPier 70 to 80 minutes before the flight, so pick a ferry that leaves you that margin. The ferry takes about 40 minutes, but check the current timetable with the operator (Shekou Cruise Homeport or CKS) before you book.
Which crossing is calmest?
Weekend mornings northbound and Sunday evenings southbound are the classic crushes at Lo Wu and the Spur Line. Heung Yuen Wai and the high-speed rail are usually quieter. No official live wait-time figure for foreign passport lanes is published in English, so leave a buffer rather than trust a blog's "10 minutes".
Who is this for — and who should skip?
It is for first-time visitors crossing from Hong Kong for a day or a few nights who want to land close to their first stop. If you are already planning the day, read a one-day Shenzhen trip from Hong Kong next. If you fly directly into Bao'an Airport, none of this applies to you.
